There goes February

February 28, 2010

There goes another month...I feel Spring in the air and I hope you do too!

Congratulations to the ladies of the group that ran their longest runs EVER this weekend. Not only have you accomplished a mileage milestone, we've also crossed the half way mark and are at 90 days and counting!

This week coming up we 'step back' to ten miles. This means that we can add miles to our mid-week runs, targeting weekly mileage totals between 20 and 24 miles. Remember the plan is flexible, so do what feels right and fits with your schedule. If it is easier to do two 3 mile runs on one day, go for it. If you feel great and want to go and extra mile, be strong and go for it. The important thing is to listen to your body. If it hurts, rest, ices, compression, elevate. If you feel strong, try an extra session of weights or Pilates or cross training.

Every week I pick something to focus on; what new 'thing' can I learn about running and wellness this week? Two weeks ago I learned a few new core moves using an exercise band (3 for ten dollars at Wal-Mart!). I was also surprised by the bonus I found that my new bands are great for stretching!

So this week my focus continues to be on stretching. I want to learn a few new stretches for a nagging hip. What will be yours?

Go Get 'Em Team. I am so proud of you!

Cold, Cold, Go Away

January 31, 2010

I need to get rid of two colds this week. According to the weather man, this weekend's temps were the coldest in nearly a year. We can only hope it's another year before they come back. Temps are improving already and the long term forecast for next Saturday is looking like mid-30s. I am sure that before we know it, we'll be in shorts and tanks and needing to start early because it's too hot! (I know the half marathon team from last summer remembers this all too well!). So, there goes cold #1...

Trusting The Plan

January 17, 2010
This is my 5th marathon. And for the record, I did say I would never do it again after all four pervious runs. But then something happens...after a while you only remember the good stuff and you want to do it again. I also really, really wanted to do this for the first timers I've gotten to know over the past six or so months because if I learned one thing through all of this, it is that doing this alone totally stinks.

Yesterday was a reminder of how much I need to trust the plan. Three weeks...

Eight is Great!

January 7, 2010
If I keep saying  Eight is Great..then running 8 miles in 18 degree weather should help us all get through our runs this weekend! Did anyone else get their "I'm training for VT" running hat?  Maybe it'll actually get warm enough at some point and we can wear them! I see a group photo in our future.

This week, I hope you begin to follow the training plan designed for our group. It's always good to mix in internval training at least one day per week. Tracy recommends Active.com and runnersworld....

Brrrrrrrr

December 20, 2009
When I got up at 6 this morning, the temp outside was 6 degrees.  It made me appreciate the 21 degrees we had yesterday!  Great job, ladies!  So many of us are tackling running through the winter for the first time, just being out there is a true accomplishment!

These next two weeks are loaded with commitments and calories for me...I will hopefully make time for my treadmill to balance it all out!

See you on the 2nd!

Here we GROW

December 9, 2009
Last count, our group was ten people and growing. This makes me so happy! It is just the motivation I needed to get out and run now that the chilly temps are here.

I am really looking forward to meeting you all this Sunday if you can make it!

Over the hump - Ready To Go

December 1, 2009
Every fall I push hard to train for an event. This year it was the Women's Tri in September and then 3 weeks later, the half marathon. Last year I ran the Philedelphia marathon the weekend before Thanksgiving. Then I take a long break, suffer from workout burn out and usually it's not until after the first of the year when every magazine you see is telling you to 'start the new year right' that I get back in gear. Well, thanks to a new pair of Brooks and our commitment to VT, I am over the hu...

So far, our team is seven strong! This makes me so excited!  Registration opens on November 1st. From what I hear, they fill up fast, so don't wait! Plus we all know, signing up for the race, is a great way to fully commit.

Thanks to our cheer captain, Shirley, here's a deal on the hotel: Sheraton (host hotel for our big event) is having a 'sale', offering buy one night get the second at 50% off.  Code is ZBT.  First night was $179.  Here is the link:

What's on my mind this week?

October 17, 2009
I am so excited and thrilled to be leading this amazing group of people.

My favorite running quote of all time is from George Sheehan, "The marathon is a purgatory of mile on mile and then at the finish the peace beyond understanding."  Thank you for this opportunity to share this peace with you.
